Almost every single time I style a clients hair they will tell me how much they wish they could style their own hair the same way. Why is giving ourselves a great blowout at home such a challenge? Is it because the thought of lifting a hair dryer above our heads for over 15 minutes burns my triceps at the thought? Perhaps another pair of arms or a removable head would make it easier, thoughts that come to my mind often, but alas we are mere mortals and the struggle is real!
Lucky for you I have just the solution!
Let me share with you my Seven Easy Tips to get that in-salon blowout look!
Tip #1
Quality hair product:
Worthwhile products will help make your hair look fuller, shinier, and more manageable. Here are a couple of products that I use every day on all of my clients including myself. The first is Aquage’s uplifting foam which is an awesome root lift that you spray directly on the roots of your hair and lightly massage it in. I like this product because it helps give the hair plenty of volumes, though unlike a mousse doesn’t leave a stiff film in your hair.
Another product worth the cash is Kenra’s Blow-dry Spray advance- dry thermal protectant. This stuff is freaking amazing. It smells like cookies, reduces blow drying time with its magical powers, and protects the hair. I’m not sure what sorcery is behind this stuff, but for any woman living in the humid south its spectacular.
Tip #2
The Right Tools:
The Epic Professional Brush by Wet Brush is a fabulous investment. I discovered wet brushes a few years ago and instantly fell in love. I literally would clear the hair stores stock of them and use them as birthday gifts for all my girlfriends. Even each of my children has a monogrammed wet brush!
Two more brushes are required: Crickets static free 370 technique and Boar’s 390 technique round brushes. The static free brush is what I use on the majority of my hair due to its excellent ventilation and the Boar brush I use on the top due to its ability to add volume and shine throughout the hair.
Another worthwhile purchase is a quality blow dryer with a nozzle attachment. My Chi Pro Blow Dryer is extremely lightweight, it helps reduces frizz and blow-dry time.
Tip # 3
Reduce Moisture:
Before you even start round brushing, first blow-dry 80% of the moisture out of your hair. This will help save those arms!
Tip #4
Clip it Back:
After your hair is about 80% dry, section off your hair into three smaller sections with hair clips to keep them up and out-of-the-way. Working in smaller sections makes the blowout easier and more efficient.
Tip #5
Work the Sides:
Place the nozzle on your blow-dryer. Split the bottom hair sections in half, work on the side using your technique 370 brush, and continue through the middle section until stopping at the top. *Side tip #5.5: I like to hold the nozzle of my blow dryer. Trust me, it just makes it easier to grasp and grip when blowing out the hair!
Tip #6
Up and Out:
With the Boar brush working in one-inch subsections blow out the top while pulling the hair over directing the hair up and out. This is your VOLUME maker!
Tip #7
Heat, Set, Curl:
Smooth out the hairline section and top of the part section with your Boar brush and blow dryer. Heat hair with the blow dryer while simultaneously rolling the brush downward into the face (think rolling a curler). Once curled on the brush, cool down the hair with the cool setting on your blow dryer. This will set the curl giving you that in-salon voluminous look for days!
