The Office Reveal: Couples Shared Office Space
Sharing how we turned a blank empty room into a shared couples office space filled with tons of storage.
This is the first room you see when you walk into our home. Our shared couples office space. Before we moved the previous owners used this space as an extra seating area. To me, this room just screamed office space so that is exactly what we did.
Before we purchased the home and before the flood fiasco, which you can read all about here, we had our contractor Kenny Gross from Carabela Custom Homes and our carpenter Dean from Mike Conkle’s Custom Cabinets take measurements of the space. To help him see my vision, I drew up plans and created a design board of what I envision for the space. We had originally hoped this project would be done in a few short weeks after moving in, but the lack of floors due to the flood took precedent. That is how three months whooshed by with my couples office remaining just a vision on a design board.
Since my husband and I were going to be sharing this space, my number one priority was to make sure there was plenty of storage and functionality. By adding floor to ceiling cabinets along the entire back wall, plenty of storage became no problem. We decided on a peninsula desk design we believed would balance the room and make it possible for us to work on either side. YEAH!, no more staring at my husbands back while he studies! Y’all I think that’s my favorite part! Being able to work across from my husband really is fun. Plus it’s a great space for kids to work on after-school crafts and homework.
DIY Herringbone Wood Wall
In between the bottom and upper cabinets, my husband and I chose to do a fun herringbone pattern which we were able to install ourselves. I’m very pleased with how this DIY project turned out. The whole thing went shockingly pretty fast and only took us a little over two hours to do and cost under a $60! As long as you make sure all of your pieces are placed exactly at a 45-degree angle everything will fit together perfectly. Heres a short video on how we did it.
Office Design
I knew I wanted the colors of this room to be blue, gold, green, & white. We painted the cabinets a Kensington Blue by Benjamin Moore. This is the same color that is on my kitchen island. The flooring is an engineered wood from Kentwood flooring installed by Good Guy Flooring (if you live in the DFW area they were a dream to work with). I love how the wood floors complement the blue.
A favorite find for this room is definitely these acrylic and gold hardware that I found on Etsy. It’s just the perfect amount of bling without making it feel too incredibly feminine for my husband. 🙂 I added other golden decor pieces to match that I found at Home Goods, Target, Hobby Lobby, and Z Gallery. My husband contributed a bit as well from Etsy (didn’t realize how much he peruses the app, haha!). With a nice find of etched race car tracks and a quote framed in books by (in my husband’s lingo) “The Great Ayrton Senna”.
For months I was on the hunt for a reasonably priced set of green velvet office chairs. The moment I found these chairs from World Market I knew it was meant to be. This Antique Gold Modular Chandler is also from World Market as well and it’s a dream.
I’m thrilled with how this entire room turned out. It is now my favorite place to get creative and likely to be the creation place of all my future Dazzling Posts!
